Tony Westmore

Tony Westmore

Tony has been drawing and painting since childhood and lived all his life on the banks of the river Medina at Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Tony paints all sorts of subjects but mainly rural, harbour and maritime scenes. Much of Tony’s work is painted or sketched on location, ‘en plein-aire’ and the Isle of Wight provides a rich source of subjects. Tony paints in Watercolour, acrylics and oils and is always experimenting with new techniques.

Ships and maritime scenes are Tony’s specialist area and has always had an interest in the ships and shipping using the Solent approaching the busy port of Southampton which he watches everyday from his waterside studio. Although Tony specialises in depicting atmospheric scenes of old shipping, trying to catch the romance of a bygone era he is equally at home with today’s shipping particularly sailing barges and larger sailing ships. His subjects also include the last days of commercial sailing vessels.

Tony’s paintings are to be found in many private collections including those of William H Miller, the American cruise lecturer and author of over 60 books on Ocean cruise liners and shipping subjects and Dame Ellen MaCarthur as well as a commission for a painting and prints for the maritime propulsion journal ‘The Motor Ship’the painting being commissioned by them to commemorate their 85th year of publication.
